This study explores the role of Madaris teachers in preventing violent extremism in the 1st District of Sarangani Province, Philippines, amid perceptions linking Islamic education to violent extremism. Drawing on qualitative data from semi-structured interviews with six Madaris teachers and three local leaders, the research addresses key questions on teachers' role in preventing violent extremism(VE), Madaris teachers’ perceptions towards VE, the curriculum and subject they taught, the programs and activities they implemented that supports peacebuilding and prevention of violent of extremism.

The findings of the study reveal that Madaris teachers serve as pivotal peacebuilders. They serve as a religious leader that clarifies misconception and misinterpretation of Islamic religion, mediators during conflict, partners of multi-stakeholders including the security forces of the government agencies in peacebuilding initiatives. They perceive violent extremism as a theological deviation marked by unjust violence, discrimination, misinterpretation of Islamic texts, and intolerance. The programs they implemented are commonly community-based program with strong partnerships with different stakeholders such as conducting Islamic symposia, parent outreach, sports competitions (Musabaqah), and leadership training that divert youth’s attention from extremism while promoting community engagement.

In summary, Madaris teachers are playing vital role in preventing violent extremism, which led the researcher to arrive in recommending policy support from local governments and Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) to standardize curricula, provide funding, and integrate teachers into formal prevention frameworks. These insights underscore the need for holistic, community-integrated approaches to enhance resilience in vulnerable Muslim regions.
